Asphalt Rolled Roofing- A Cost Effective Roofing Option

Several utility structures in North America are now making the shift from traditional Cedar shake roofing to Asphalt roofing. It costs less and is light weight.  It is an economically feasible roofing option for small outhouses and a contingency water catching and wind breaking layer under the outmost roofing tiles. It is also used as flat roofing for homes. Metal roofing lasts twice as long as asphalt roofing. Further, curved metal roofing combines the toughness of metal roofing along with architectural flexibility.

The asphalt rolled roofing are shipped as rolls. This limits their size. Also, the uppermost layer expands and contracts repeatedly and hence is vulnerable to temperature exerted cracking and tearing. As a result, they don’t provide effective insulation.  Any asphalt roofing has a base fibre base mat which is saturated with asphalt shingles and then topped with granular stones. They come in several varieties depending on the fibre content and the underside. On the basis of fibre content it can be divided into three classes. Mixed rag fibre is the most inexpensive and short living fibre.

All plastic fibres have intermediate cost and life.  Fibreglass is the longest living fibre content type. The underside can be left uncoated or made self adhesive or torchable. Uncoated asphalt rolled roofing are the most common ones and require adhesives and nails to hold them in place. Self adhesive types of such roofing are easier to apply and can be taken up as diy projects. Finally, torchable roofing is torched from the inner side and stuck to the surface owing to fusion caused by torching.

Installation of asphalt rolling roofing can be done yourself or by a contractor. Before beginning yourself, go through online tutorials on installing such roofs.  In case that you choose to have a contractor do it, make sure to get estimates from several companies in order to ensure the best price. Generally, the sheet is glued onto the roof with bitumen mixture. Then clout nail heads are driven into the surface to seal the sheet. If the underside is torchable, a torch is used to melt it and then the sheet is pressed into place.
