Slate Roof Repair - The DIY Guide

Slate Roofs are considered one of the best choices among modern roof types. They are durable and ideal, keeping in mind their long life in comparison to the other contemporary options. However slate roofs are prone to corrosion around the fixing nails commonly known as ‘Nail Sickness’ caused due to the weather conditions and arising the need for slate roof repair. The repair can be done in two ways, Nail and Bib repair method and Slate Hook repair method.

Nail and Bib repair method employs nail and bibs to fasten the replacement slates in place of the damaged material. The broken slate is first removed by means of a slate ripper to hook the nails holding the damaged slate before installing the new one. Once the nails are removed, the slate is removed from the roof. The new slate material is now fitted back in place of the old product and a nail is driven into the slot to keep the slate in position.

A bib is then fixed over the tapped nail and under the replaced slate. Review the material after installing and confirm that the bib is not strapped over the slate as it may bend due to ice or snow and also provides a bad look for the roof. Nailing is one of the demanding activities which increase the roof repair difficulty level. Neither should the nail be driven hard enough to break the slate nor should it allow the slate to rest on its head so as to introduce a stress-inducing high spot.

The other slate roof repair method uses slate hooks to hold the replaced slate as compared to the previous idea of using nails to hold. The slate hook can be of copper or stainless steel material and is driven into place once the damaged slate is removed. The slate hooks holds the slate which is replaced permanently as the slate is slid in place.

The high price involved in installing a slate roof demands a proper review and timely replacement of the roof products.
